Shaped by ancient glaciers and widely known as the Upper Valley, the Dartmouth/Lake Sunapee Region has charm that stems from its rich history, striking landscape, abundant natural resources, and agricultural roots.
Artists, writers, educators and craftsmen from around the world have made their homes here. Situated on the west side of the state, the region is home to Dartmouth College and other respected institutions. Textile and other manufacturing played a major role in the area’s history, and agriculture rounds out its character with organic farms, orchards, private stock farms, tree farms and maple sugaring.
Campers find four-season opportunities to explore the region’s splendor – via foot, bicycle, horseback, kayak, boat, snowshoes, snowmobile, and ATV! Hikers enjoy the Appalachian Trail and Mount Sunapee, plus hundreds of other scenic trails ranging from easy to expert; golfers enjoy lush greens; boaters and swimmers enjoy the nine-mile Lake Sunapee; and skiers and snowmobilers enjoy groomed trails or forge their own. Summer visitors to the Mount Sunapee Resort enjoy the Outdoor Adventure Park with Zip Lines and a Tree-top Obstacle Course while snow skiing and snowboarding are still the most popular winter activities at Mount Sunapee.
Nationally-acclaimed scenic byways beckon motorists and cyclists to experience spectacular vistas and landmarks such as the Pier Bridge, the longest wooden covered bridge in the world. The Connecticut River Byway runs along Rte. 12A, and a second byway stretches along Rte. 103 to 11. Delicious dining and relaxed shopping opportunities also abound throughout the region’s quaint villages.
