If one were attempting to sum up the Great North Woods
in as few words as possible, it would probably be "unspoiled, wilderness". Truly
the last frontier, this region stretches above the White Mountains Region, to the Canadian
border.
The famous Connecticut Lakes and the upper area of the Connecticut River offer trout
and salmon fishing. Great North Woods guides are available to take you to those favored
fishing spots. Presidents have cast for salmon and brook trout in these waters, while
others have traveled the country roads and deep woods to hunt or just watch the wildlife.
To say nothing about the spectacular moose watching opportunities that await you would
be leaving out one of the almost guaranteed events of your trip. Bring your camera, and
plenty of film.
Scenic drives are what it is all about in the Great North Woods. Whether it be
traveling on Route 3, which allows you spectacular views of the rolling farmland along the
Connecticut River, or driving across Rte. 26 past on of the Grand Old Hotels "The
Balsams" in Dixville Notch. Yes, it is a steep, but very short climb, nothing to be
concerned about with that RV. Then you're on your way down towards Errol and Lake Umbagog,
where the majestic American Eagle has begun to nest once again.
Turning south one enters 13-mile woods on Route 16. Stop along the way and watch
canoeist and kayakers glide down the mix of smooth and sometimes rough waters of the
Androscoggin River. Ss you enter the outskirts of the City of Berlin you can imagine the
lumbermen of days long past, as they jumped across the logs damming up the river, trying
to keep the logs moving towards the paper mill which remains in operation today.
