CAMPGROUND LISTINGSarrow.gif

sm-lake.gif Year after year campers, weekenders, vacationers and those who stay all summer, comeback to their favorite places in the Lakes Region. It's almost as if they were addicted to the diverse pleasure of the area.

The large lakes and small ponds (it is said there are 273 in all) enhance the beauty that is abundant here. There are mountains, deep woods, farmlands, and small quiet villages and busy resort towns, all geared up to making visitors enjoy the surroundings.

There is summer theater, night clubs, and restaurants serving gourmet fare and others with a reputation for just plain good home cooking.

The camping runs all the way from small, quiet, primitive places to resorts with all the amusements to satisfy the most finicky families.

The lakes make the region a mecca for swimming, fishing, water skiing, boating and related recreation. If you don't have your own boat, you can cruise Lake Winnipesaukee, the state's largest, on the vessel Mount Washington. Boat trips also are available on Squam Lake, the "Golden Pond" of movie fame.

Family attractions to enjoy include The Museum of Childhood in Wakefield, The Wright Museum of World War II in Wolfeboro, the Antique Boat Museum in Meredith, Castle Springs with its famous castle in the Clouds in Moultonboro, The New Hampshire Farm Museum in Milton, the Science Center in Holderness, amusements at Weirs Beach, and the Belknap Mill, a center for the arts in Laconia.

You can watch exquisite glassware being made at Pepi Herrman Crystal in Gilford, or take a tour of the Hampshire Pewter Co. in Wolfeboro.

Shopping is everywhere in the Lake Region from small boutiques in resort towns to malls that have factory outlets and huge warehouse stores.

Most of the region is an all-season vacation area. Fall is harvest season with fresh produce along the highway a big treat as you view the foliage. There is ice fishing and ice sailing in winter, places to ski both cross-country and downhill, and skating. Or come in the Spring when everything starts to come alive.

The Lake Region is the middle of the state, making it an ideal base for wandering all over New Hampshire if you choose.
